Looking at the answer too soon

Focusing only on definitions

Next 5 minutes: Check
Compare your answers with your course material.
Mark anything you forgot or misunderstood.
Next 5 minutes: Fix the gaps
Study the areas you missed.

Schedule that session rather than relying on memory to remind you.

How to Combine Active Recall With Other Study Methods
I would not use active recall as your only study technique.
A good academic study system usually involves several complementary activities.
You might begin by reading to build understanding, use diagrams or examples to clarify difficult ideas, retrieve the information from memory, and then practise applying it to unfamiliar questions.
